The Kongming Lock was created by Zhuge Kongming according to the theory of the Eight Diagrams and Metaphysics during the Three Kingdoms period (A.D. 220-280), and got its creative idea from the Wooden Ox and Floating Horses in the Romance of Three Kingdoms. Made of six wood blocks, it has over a hundred types of structures and dozens of Kongming locks may be linked together by different unlocking means, some of which are similar in shape to a pagoda. Besides, some of them are compared to octuple or decuple pavilions.
